When and where do bats hibernate?

In northern climates, bats that live in colonies will try to hibernate in their summer roosts if internal temperature of the roosts do not drop below freezing. If they are too cold bats will migrate to areas caves or mines and hibernate there. Solitary bats migrate south to warmer temperatures. Hibernation and migration begin in the fall. In the south bats may not hibernate at all but go into a daily torpor in cooler temperatures.
