Bat Information

The common vampire bat (Desomdus rotundus)

The Organization for Bat Conservation's Bat Zone at Cranbrook Institute of Science houses a colony of vampire bats. Our vampire bats are on display for the public in a natural cave-like habitat. Many of these vampire bats have been hand-raised and handled often and are used in our educational programs. Three of our favorite vampire bats are Twoey, Tink, and Wizard. These three bats were orphaned at a young age and raised by OBC's director Kim Williams. They are very tame, and although they live with the colony, love human interaction.

Here is a photo of Wizard when she was first getting weaned on blood. In the syringe is a combination milk (a special formula we make up just for baby vampire bats, thank you to Susan Bernard at www.basicallybats.org), and blood. This photograph was taken by Sherrill Jackson whom takes many of OBC's photos (thank you Sherrill!).
